Frequently asked questions

How is GST calculated on a price?

To add GST: GST amount = base price × rate ÷ 100, and the total = base price + GST. For example, ₹1,000 at 18% GST gives ₹180 tax and a total of ₹1,180.

How do I remove GST from an inclusive amount?

Use the reverse formula: base price = inclusive amount × 100 ÷ (100 + rate). For example, if a bill of ₹1,180 includes 18% GST, the base is ₹1,000 and the GST portion is ₹180. The 'Remove GST' mode does this for you.

What are the GST rates in India?

The main GST slabs are 5%, 12%, 18% and 28%, with a special 3% rate for gold and some items at 0%. Rates can change with GST Council decisions, so always confirm the current rate for your product or service (HSN/SAC code) before billing.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For a sale within the same state, GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state) — 18% becomes 9% + 9%. For a sale between two states, the full rate is charged as a single IGST. The total tax is the same either way.

Is this GST calculator free?

Yes. It's completely free with no sign-up. Everything is calculated in your browser, so the amounts you enter are never uploaded or stored anywhere.

Can I use this for reverse GST calculation?

Yes. Switch to 'Remove GST' mode, enter the GST-inclusive amount and the rate, and you'll instantly see the base value and the exact tax portion — this is exactly what a reverse GST calculator does.
